Deadline fast approaching
Brazil has issued a strong appeal for governments to file updated climate commitments before September, warning that delays could jeopardize progress at the Cop30 UN climate summit in November. So far, just 28 nations have handed in their proposals, leaving out some of the biggest emitters, including China and the EU.
UN needs plans for key assessment
The United Nations requires all nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by 25 September in order to prepare a global report showing how close—or how far—the world is from the 1.5C temperature limit. Without these plans, negotiations at Cop30 could face serious setbacks.
Brazil increases pressure on partners
Cop30 president André Corrêa do Lago told governments that ambitious climate plans are essential, not optional. He said Brazil expects China to deliver a robust pledge before the deadline and highlighted President Lula da Silva’s recent talks with Xi Jinping as proof of rising diplomatic pressure.
Practical hurdles for the summit
Meanwhile, concerns remain over Belém, the Amazon city hosting the talks. With tens of thousands of delegates expected but limited hotel capacity, accommodation shortages and soaring prices risk excluding smaller nations and civil society groups. Brazil is chartering cruise ships and encouraging rentals, but criticism persists.
