Attempt to save classmate ends tragically along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast
Alexandria, Egypt – Seven young people lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea after a rescue attempt went wrong west of Alexandria.
About 150 students were gathered at the beach when one female student entered the water on Saturday, despite a red warning flag signaling dangerous conditions. She quickly got into trouble amid strong waves.
Several classmates rushed in to help her but were swept away by the currents. Authorities confirmed that six victims, aged 15 to 21, drowned during the incident.
The next day, rescuers recovered another body, a man around 20 who had also jumped in to assist, according to local news site Al-Masri al-Jum. Additionally, 24 other students were treated after nearly drowning.
The event serves as a reminder of the hazards posed by rough seas and strong currents along Egypt’s Mediterranean beaches.
