Sky has put 900 UK roles at risk as it reshapes its business to compete with US streaming services. The consultation process is expected to result in around 600 job cuts, with 300 staff redeployed. The move affects technology, product, and corporate teams and follows recent launches including Sky Glass and Sky Glass Air.
Since early 2023, Sky has cut nearly 3,500 roles, moving away from traditional satellite pay-TV toward internet-based products like Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which now account for over 90% of new subscriptions. The cuts bring the workforce back to roughly 23,000, the level when Comcast acquired the company in 2018.
Earlier this year, Sky reduced 2,000 roles at customer service centers and closed three sites, and last January cut 800 installation jobs as viewers shifted to plug-and-play streaming devices. A recent deal with Warner Bros Discovery will make HBO Max available via Sky, ending its exclusive broadcast rights for certain programming.
