An electric streetcar derailed in Lisbon on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 others. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side along a narrow, steep hill. The tram’s roof and sides appeared partially crushed as dozens of emergency workers responded. Local media reported the accident occurred around 6 pm, during evening rush hour. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the derailment.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa publicly expressed sympathy for the victims and their families following the deadly incident.

The Glória funicular carries over 40 passengers, both seated and standing. Lisbon residents frequently rely on the steep-hill tram for daily travel.
