The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution supporting an independent Palestinian state and a two-state solution.
The measure condemns Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel and criticizes Israel’s siege of Gaza for causing humanitarian suffering.
Member States Show Strong Support
Out of 193 member countries, 142 voted in favor, 10 opposed, and 12 abstained from the New York Declaration.
France and Saudi Arabia presented the resolution, calling for the Palestinian Authority to govern all Palestinian territory.
Transitional Administration After Ceasefire
The resolution directs officials to form a transitional administrative committee immediately after Gaza reaches a ceasefire.
It orders Hamas to end its rule in Gaza, surrender weapons, and release all hostages to the Palestinian Authority.
UN Mission for Protection
The declaration proposes a UN-backed mission to safeguard Palestinian civilians and ensure safety for Israeli civilians as well.
The mission would support peaceful transfer of authority to the Palestinian Authority, monitor the ceasefire, and oversee future peace efforts.
