Canadian privacy officials concluded that TikTok does not adequately protect children’s personal data. They said the platform allows underage access and mishandles sensitive information.
Children continue to use the platform
Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children access TikTok each year. The company maintains the app is not meant for users under 13. Investigators confirmed that many minors still manage to use it.
Sensitive data exploited for ads
The inquiry revealed that TikTok collected personal information from large numbers of children. The platform used this data to target advertising and influence content. Officials warned that such practices could harm young users.
Company pledges stronger safeguards
TikTok announced new measures to protect Canadian users. It disputed parts of the investigation but did not specify which findings it rejects.
Privacy commissioner raises concern
Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne led the investigation with other officials. He said TikTok collects vast amounts of user data, including from minors. He warned that targeted ads and content may negatively affect children.
Mr Dufresne confirmed TikTok agreed to improve measures against underage use. The company also promised to clarify how it handles children’s data.
TikTok responds to criticism
A spokesperson said the platform welcomed the inquiry. They noted that Canadian officials accepted several company proposals to strengthen safeguards. The spokesperson added that TikTok remains committed to privacy and transparency despite disagreeing with parts of the report.
Global scrutiny intensifies
The Canadian findings add to worldwide examination of TikTok. Governments are questioning its impact on children and raising national security concerns. The Chinese-owned company and Beijing deny all allegations.
In the United States, former President Donald Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Talks included a possible takeover of TikTok’s US operations by American firms.
In Europe, the European Commission ordered staff in 2023 to delete TikTok from corporate devices and phones. Officials said the measure aimed to protect data and improve cybersecurity.
