Jennifer Lawrence received the Premio Donostia 2025 at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, becoming the youngest performer to earn the lifetime achievement honor at 35. The Oscar winner used the occasion to warn that “our freedom of speech is under attack in America, including in the world of film,” stressing the need for empathy and creative freedom.
Lawrence presented her latest film Kill Me Love, which she also produced, and encouraged young filmmakers to keep pursuing their dreams. Reflecting on women in Hollywood, she praised directors such as Greta Gerwig for showing how greater opportunities expand perspectives and storytelling.
The actress, known for The Hunger Games, Don’t Look Up and Joy, has also promoted social impact projects through her company Excellent Cadaver.
Her award came during a politically charged festival, marked by repeated protests and statements in support of Palestine. Demonstrators and filmmakers condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, with artists such as Juliette Binoche and Pedro Almodóvar calling for an end to the violence.
Lawrence now joins past Donostia recipients including Penélope Cruz, Julia Roberts and Viggo Mortensen, her recognition highlighting both her career achievements and the festival’s role as a platform for global causes.
