A shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach killed ten people, including one gunman, and injured more than a dozen others. A Hanukkah event was underway when the attack began. Authorities continue investigating the motives behind the violence.
New South Wales Police confirmed ten fatalities in Sunday’s attack, identifying one of the dead as a gunman. Officers said another suspected gunman remains in critical condition at a hospital. Eyewitnesses reported seeing injured people lying on the sand with blood surrounding them. Many witnesses described dozens of victims needing urgent medical care.
Officials respond amid panic and fear
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese posted a statement on X expressing condolences to victims and urging public caution. He said police and emergency responders work actively to save lives. Albanese described the scenes at Bondi as shocking and distressing and extended support to everyone affected.
He confirmed federal authorities coordinate with NSW Police and promised updates as more information emerges. He urged people near the beach to follow official police instructions. NSW Police also issued a warning at 7:30 p.m., telling people to take shelter or avoid Bondi Beach entirely. Videos on social media showed crowds fleeing as gunshots rang out and sirens blared.
Investigations continue as questions remain
The Hanukkah gathering drew about 2,000 people, though authorities have not confirmed whether the group was targeted. Investigators are exploring all possible motives. Additional footage showed police detaining two suspects on a civilian bridge. Earlier, the suspects appeared to fire shots from what looked like sniper rifles.
Eyewitnesses reported more than 50 shots hitting beach-goers, civilians, and vehicles. Authorities continue collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine how and why the attack occurred.
